Final Grade Calculator Methodology & Formula

Required Final Exam Score Formula

Let C be your current non-final course average, T your target course percentage, F the exam score and w the final exam weight divided by 100. The weighted equation is T = C × (1 - w) + F × w. Solving for F gives:

F = (T - C × (1 - w)) ÷ w.

Completed Course Grade Formula

After taking the final, enter your actual exam percentage F. Your overall course grade is C × (1 - w) + F × w.

Weight Conversion and Validation

A 40% final uses w = 0.40. Grades must be finite percentages from 0 to 100, and exam weight must be from 0 to 100. Required-score mode needs weight greater than 0; completed-grade mode accepts 0 and returns the current grade. Blank, nonnumeric, negative and out-of-range inputs are rejected. A 0% weight cannot determine a required exam score. Decimal inputs such as 89.5, 22.5 and 7.25 are supported.

Assumptions and Limitations

The final exam must be the only remaining graded component. The current average must exclude the final and correctly represent the weighted non-final coursework, normalized to that part of the course. A gradebook that already counts an ungraded final as zero needs an adjusted current average.

Extra-credit policies, dropped assignments, curves, missing projects and category weighting need their underlying point or category data. This tool does not infer those adjustments from a single average. Letter and passing thresholds are examples and vary by syllabus.

Display Rounding

Calculations use full JavaScript numerical precision without rounding intermediate steps. Results display up to two decimal places with trailing zeros removed. Display rounding does not change feasibility checks or scenario calculations. For a non-exact reachable threshold, the result also suggests a minimum rounded upward to two decimal places. Your instructor's rounding policy may differ; a displayed threshold should not be treated as a guarantee when the unrounded value is slightly higher.

Unreachable and Already-Secured Targets

If F exceeds 100%, a standard 100% exam cannot reach the target. The maximum overall grade is C × (1 - w) + 100 × w. If F is at or below zero, a zero on the final already meets the target under the entered assumptions. The zero-exam outcome is C × (1 - w). Mandatory exam or attendance requirements can still apply.

Completed-final check: 85 × 0.80 + 90 × 0.20 = 86%. A 0% final weight is rejected in required-score mode and returns the current grade in completed-grade mode. For reachable targets, substitute the unrounded required score into the completed-grade equation to verify the target.

History and Sharing

History records save locally and identify the calculation mode. Older records remain visible as legacy calculations because they may include previous adjustments. Shared URLs carry the selected mode, grades and weight. Old links with nonzero extra credit require review before recalculating.
